Health Care reform is a hot button issue right now and it seems to me that a lot of people are angry about the public option without really providing a good reason why they dislike it. They call it socialism and claim the government can't do anything right so why should they be involved in health insurance. But really those are both just canards thrown out there without any real meaning. So let's cut through the bullshit and have an honest discussion about the public option.
- It's socialism in the same sense that every other public service our government provides for us is socialism. Nobody who is opposed to government involvement in Health Care seems to be concerned that the government is involved in Education or providing the Police or Water Services. The government doesn't want to take over all the hospitals and employ all the doctors; they just want to provide an additional insurance option.
- Some people claim the government sucks and can't possibly manage such a complicated endeavor. Of course they conveniently ignore the fact that the government has been doing just that with the Military for a very long time; and trust me the military is far more complicated than processing medical payments. Add in the fact that the government already has experience with medical work thanks to Medicare and Medicaid and it's obvious that the government can, in fact, handle something this complicated.
So what exactly is you're problem with the government providing an additional insurance option? Even if they do you don't have to use that option - you can keep on paying a private company to provide your insurance. You can pick the best deal for your needs.
I have no problem with people making a buck and I don't want to see private insurance companies run out of business; but clearly something has to be done to provide reasonable levels of health care for everyone regardless of their income level or employment status. Thus, if you are adamantly opposed to the Public Option why and what is your alternative that will actually help people?
