Google Chrome - Initial Impressions

advertisement

Google Chrome, Google's newly announced and just released browser, has been available for download for about 20 minutes now so I assume you have gotten it and had a chance to play. If not I offer you my initial impressions on this new browser and how I think it might effect the browser landscape in the future.

Bookmarking is basically the same as it is in Firefox; you just click a small star icon and it is done. You can edit the bookmark for further control such as folder hierarchy. You can not, however, add tags to your bookmarks which, I suppose, will disappoint some people. I am a pretty avid bookmarker but I honestly don't use the bookmarks themselves very often so I don't really care much about bookmark management. I typically use del.icio.us to store my bookmarks so the one thing I am already missing in Chrome are extensions.

That's right there are no extensions, at this time, in Chrome. It is possible that extensions will be in a future release - this is a first ever beta for the product after all - but the absence of extensions is glaring. I don't use many extensions in my firefox install but those that I do use are fairly critical to my daily tasks. For instance I use the gmail manager extension so I don't have gmail open all the time. Likewise I use the Google reader notifier extension. I already miss both of these in Chrome.

One thing I instantly noticed about Chrome though was it loads webpages fast. I know this is no scientific measurement but trust me it just loads them fast. For instance newsvine, which can often be sluggish for me in Firefox loaded with a nice peppy responsiveness in Chrome. Not only did it load fast but it works without a problem. No weird bugs have popped up, no strange rendering, it just works and it does it well. As far as clean and simple browsing goes Chrome seems to have it down.

One nice thing about not having extensions is I can focus just on what Chrome is doing. However, were Chrome to have extensions there is a cool feature called the Task Manager that lets you see what is going on in the browser. I think this would be a great addition to Firefox for helping users decide what plugins might be causing problems in their browser. A quick "shift+esc" is all it takes to load the task manager. The task manager also gives you the option to dig a little deeper into some memory usage reports which load up in a new tab within Chrome.

Like the memory report you can load your history and your download history into a new tab. Both are fully searchable. When you search your history you are not only shown a link to each matching entry but a thumbnail is loaded as well. I imagine the enhanced history view is thanks in no small part to the Google Gears backend that helps power Chrome. Gears provides a local database for data storage and indexing so it seems a natural fit.

The tabs' show up a little different than in any other browser because they show up above the address bar. This is because each tab is really its own browser so you get all the controls with the tab. That means you can drag a tab out of the window and easily spawn a new window if you want. This is good because if one page starts to go haywire you can kill it without shutting down the whole browser. The negative is there is a slightly higher up front memory cost to using Chrome.

Text areas, such as the one where I write my my post, highlight spelling problems but there doesn't seem to be a real spell checking correction tool in the right click menu. I really like that feature in firefox so I hope I am just missing it in Chrome and that it will appear shortly; I mean what good does it do for me to know a word is spelled wrong if the spell checker won't offer some suggestions? It seems I was wrong. The corrections are there to select from. I'm not sure why I didn't see them yesterday. I apologize for the incorrect information.

I'm going to try and stick with Chrome for the next week at least and see how it does. As much as I like the convenience of some of my firefox extensions I am more interested in stability and if Chrome turns out to be more stable than Firefox (which has had some problems for me) then I will probably switch for good (or until a better browser turns up).

Finally, I don't think Google is really aiming for market share with Google Chrome. Sure, I think market share would be nice but I think, in truth, they are just looking for a more tenable position from which to lobby and petition for new features in future browsers and for new standards. By making this move they are hoping to spur innovation and technological capabilities in all browsers so that their online applications, such as Google Docs, can become even more powerful.

They have currently hit the apex of what can be accomplished within modern browsers considering their current limitations. However, if all browsers offer a standard local data storage mechanism, improved javascript processing, and "garbage handling" then Google can look toward building even more compelling online applications. In the end Google doesn't care if you use their applications with IE, Firefox, Safari, or Chrome - they just want you to use their applications. By improving the platform those applications are delivered on they can then add more value to their applications and thus convert users into loyal ones.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

So far I like it. There are some small niggles such as the fact that the tab bar is visible even if you only have one tab - but I don't mind that too much since the concept of tabs have been changed pretty substantially

I had pretty much the same reaction. The first thing that I noticed when I went someplace in Chrome was advertisements. That pretty much told me until I can recreate my Firefox environment, Chrome is just going to be another pretty browser to me.

I installed Chrome and it isn't displaying pages right. It completely breaks newsvine, G/Reader and gmail. Very odd. Perhaps my proxy doesn't like it.

You probably don't have the correct fonts installed. I fixed this issue by clicking the wrench on the upper right corner, then looked at the fonts listed in the stylesheet and found that I didn't have the fonts. I simply googled and downloaded free fonts, i.e., lucida grande, helvetica, problem solved.

That's really odd. I have been using newsvine and gmail pretty much non-stop since downloading it. Plus I am trying out a new feature of picasaweb (another article waiting there perhaps).

Actually using the "Inspect Element" feature, I discovered my "Georgia.ttf" font was corrupted. I simply deleted it, using command prompt and replaced it with new, fresh font!

No problem. The download is a little odd - you actually just download an installer which downloads the actual browser.

I did have small problem when first starting it - it wanted to import my bookmarks etc from firefox but you have to shutdown firefox for it to be able to do that. I also use a wierd shell in windows and I think it caused the installation to hang a little (or maybe it was the processing of everything it imported). I'm not sure but it took a while to launch the first time. Since then however it has started up quickly and has worked fine.

            A fine review.

I agree with you on the speed. This thing does seem to load pages alot faster than FF.

I'm seeing spelling suggestions when I right click on misspelled words.

That said, It works pretty good so far and everything loads correctly and quickly. To me, one of the most important differences is that it uses less than half the memory Firefox uses. That's big!

I tested the latest Firefox, IE and Opera for memory usage. Google wins hands down with the least amount of memory used.

I love Firefox too and you are right...the memory usage is a bummer.

Been using Chrome all day. It seems quite stable; only a few lags here and there, likely the websites.

Not sure I like the tabs on top of the window, or that the unselected tabs are only a slightly different color. Also, I hate having a gigantic address bar; I like shrinking it and placing back and forward buttons nearer the middle.

                No 'stop loading' button!

Separate processes for each tab, awesome. Had a pdf hang and the window closed immediately when I clicked the 'x' and everything was fine.

Blank tab show most visited sites and history, awesome.

Instantly imported all my bookmarks, etc from FF3.

                Interface is very responsive, 'snappy.'

Java engine (V8) appears to have a few issues, as well as other plugins.

Overall, I am still using it!

After discovering that my Georgia TTF font was corrupt and fixing it by deleting it, I soon added some web services buttons, i.e., "Seed Newsvine" by dragging the button to the bookmark toolbar and others; sadly Digg removed their button in favor of an Firefox toolbar so I couldn't use their button but did get at least a link to their submit link page. Other than that, I think I'll be using it more now that I can save links to my bookmarking services.

I downloaded and been running Chrome 1 hr and 22 min after the release. She`s quick. been running IE8 Beta for 6 days now and have had to hit the compatibility button ( microsfts quick fix button") on 1/3 of the pages loaded (graphic glitches and pull down search boxes in forums) On Chrome I`ve been keeping 5 or 6 tabs running my looped sattelite weatherpage, MsNBC , newsvine, usga white riversystem hydro production resevoir page(generator flows/lake levels etc.) and a few times I had to wait a few seconds and its been sloow and glitchy on my msnbc videos ( which usually runs awesome on my broadband wireless connection I have) It opted for me to download a plug-in right off the bat but thats it...

Overall descent but havent streamed any serious video or radio yet.

cool you are the first person who I have heard who has actually installed an additional plugin. I presume the plugin install process was smooth?

Yeah it was smooth .... is was an active x plug-in that it prompted me for. But I`m still experiencing slow glitchy msnbc videos .... when I run the same videos on IE8 its fine... so its definately a google thing ... even with just one webpage open

No problems with msnbc or cnn videos here.

I did find a new bug tho'. Lost my net connection and couldn't load a page. Chrome does not seem to want to close after a failed load attempt due to lost connection. Opened Chrome task manager, closed all extra processes, closed task manager, then closed the last tab and got "Oops. Chrome has crashed. Restart?"

Happened several times. 'X' button nor right click-close worked.

                                  More:

It seems Chrome has a problem with failed loads. Tried to load Cnn earlier and got 'unavailable' message. Chrome returned the same message on every attempt even though FF3 was able to load the site. Closed and reopened Chrome, the site loaded normally.

I have allowed google data collection, so hopefully they pick up on it. I suppose I will try to report.

try ctrl+f5 when things are going crazy. I had a page doing something similar (it wouldn't load) but I waited about 20 seconds, hit ctrl+f5 and it worked.

I'm not sure if it was because I waited (perhaps Chrome has a default timeout where it won't try again if the site connection fails) or if the ctrl+f5 worked (which typically tries a total refresh of a page and wipes out any cached stuff at that domain with the exception of cookies).

Good review of Chrome. My initial thought about Google coming out with a new browser was "Why?". Do we really need another browser? What's going to set it apart. After playing with Chrome for a couple of days, I do like it. It is missing extensions / add-ons, but this will be coming. This is only a beta, so some bugs and flaky behavior should be expected.

One of my questions is, how long will this stay in beta? Wasn't Gmail in beta status for several years?

Anyway, I would expect to see more applications centered around this browser, and tied in to it, introduced over the next 6 months.

It will be interesting to see what kind of traction Google gets with this effort over the next 3 - 9 months. However, they will need to provide users with a compelling reason to move away from Firefox, IE, Opera or any one of a half dozen others.

psulion and Roy - you're right that I should have mentioned in my article that this is in Beta - really it's in early beta considering it is only at version 0.2.

I read somewhere recently that an extension API is a high priority item for Chrome and that they are actively working on one. I would imagine that we will see it in one of the next couple of updates to the application.

I like it because its something different... No genuine validation certificate for this baby.... After they get the bugs out it`ll likely grow in popularity amongst the growing numbers of people yearning for some kind of freedom from microsofts grip of domination.

We got the Chrome ..... just need the Hurst Shifter and Crager 5 spokes now... hehe

Chrome has seen a lot of interest - on my tech blog the numbers of visiters using Chrome have been pretty startling:

From July 31-Aug 31 the top browsers were:
                                            Firefox: 51.34%
                                            IE: 43.59%
                                            Safari: 2.72%

From Aug 1 to Today the top browsers are:
                                            Firefox: 47.79%
                                            IE: 39.96%
                                            Chrome: 6.63%

                                            From Sep1 to Today:
                                            Firefox - 37.52
                                            Chrome - 27.77
                                            IE - 27.42
                                            Safari - 5.58

So it looks like both IE and Firefox have suffered a little from Chrome's arrival.

Not really. They made a big splash but that is to be expected - they are Google, everything they do attract attention. I'll be more interested in the numbers a month from now after the shiny newness has worn off.

Even given the special circumstances of the blog though I thought it was interesting that so many people gave a .2 version beta browser a look.

Its amazing what a brand name can do.
