Code of Honor Bookmarklet

advertisement

If you're reading this then you probably already know the CoH - and you might even find yourself having to cite part of it on occassion while explaining to someone that they shouldn't be seeding their own stuff; you know, that whole self-promotion issue.

I don't find myself having to tell many people about the CoH but when I do it always seems to be in relation to a Self Promotion seed or "article" (that is actually just a seed to their external content). Inevitably I end up having to mention the CoH, providing a link to it, and then quoting item 3. However, I'm lazy and don't like having to type, essentially, the same thing more than once. With that in mind I created a bookmarklet that should, theoretically, work in both IE and FF. It will insert some stock text into the "comment" box so you can quickly give the seeder/author a heads up.

Sadly, I can't put a bookmarklet into this article so I'm going to give you step by step instructions on how to do this.

Firefox

  1. Go to your bookmarks menu
  2. Select "Organize Bookmarks"
  3. Click on the "New Bookmark" button
  4. Enter "CoH Warning" in Bookmark name
  5. copy this quoted text:

    javascript:u=document.getElementById('commentsText_');void(u.value='You may want to review the ToS for Newsvine and the <a href="http://www.newsvine.com/_cms/info/codeofhonor">Code of Honor</a>, in particular item #3:\n\n<blockquote>Newsvine is for collaborative discovery and discussion of the news, not self-promotion. Posting full articles which also appear on your blog is acceptable but seeding your own stuff is not.</blockquote>\n\nHope this helps.');location.replace('#entercomment');

  6. paste the previous text into the bookmarks "location" field
  7. click the "OK" button

Internet Explorer

  1. Go to your favorites menu
  2. Select "Add To Favorites"
  3. Enter "CoH Warning" in favorite name
  4. Click the "Add" button
  5. Go to your favorites menu again
  6. Find your new favorite "CoH Warning"
  7. Right click on that favorite and a new menu will appear
  8. Select "properties" from the menu (it should be the last option)
  9. copy this quoted text:

    javascript:u=document.getElementById('commentsText_');void(u.value='You may want to review the ToS for Newsvine and the <a href="http://www.newsvine.com/_cms/info/codeofhonor">Code of Honor</a>, in particular item #3:\n\n<blockquote>Newsvine is for collaborative discovery and discussion of the news, not self-promotion. Posting full articles which also appear on your blog is acceptable but seeding your own stuff is not.</blockquote>\n\nHope this helps.');location.replace('#entercomment');

  10. paste the previous text into the favorites "url" field in the properties dialog
  11. click the "OK" button
  12. If prompted with a message "The protocol javascript does not have a registered program. Do you want to keep this target anyway" dialog click the "Yes" button

Perhaps, this functionality already exists elsewhere or Adam Hobson will add something like it to the newsvine firefox toolbar. Until then I hope this makes it easier for you to help people use the vine properly while helping to keep the spam at bay.

I just added a small addition to the bookmarklet script which will automatically scroll you down to the comment box your comment is pasted in. Thanks to Gleuch for this small, but very handy addition!

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I've followed these directions (FF), but how would actually post the comment?

Oh sorry. When you are on a seed or "article" that you think violates CoH #3 just zoom up to your bookmarks/favorites and select that one. It should then pre-populate the comment box with some standard text which you can edit or append to if you wish. Then just hit the post comment button as you normally would.

Just so you can all see what the comment will look like:

You may want to review the ToS for Newsvine and the Code of Honor, in particular item #3:

Hope this helps.

Ok I fixed it - sorry. There was a missing semicolon in the bookmark text you were copying and pasting (my mistake entirely).

I apologize. And it should work fine now.

I have tested in both FF 2 and IE 7

You need to recopy and paste the contents of the "quoted" text in the post and replace the location/url in your bookmarklet with it. Then it should work fine.

Okay, weird. I tried it after your fix, and got the above. Then I copied and pasted the text again, just to make sure, and now it won't work at all again.

I wish I could make this like a normal bookmarklet (where you just drag a link to your toolbar) but it wouldn't work that way.

Make sure there is nothing else in the location/url part of your bookmark and make sure you only select the quoted text (and that you don't miss any of the characters in the quoted text).

Weird! I just tried it again in both IE and FF, and nothing happens when I click the bookmarklet.

I got this new laptop a couple of months ago, and it has Vista, and does weird things sometimes. I think it doesn't understand javascript or something. When I click on my conversation trackers, for example, they take FOREVER to appear, in both IE and FF. I started using that Flock browser just for browsing Newsvine, because I noticed I didn't have that problem when I used it.

I'll keep messing around and see if I can't figure it out. Surely it's just me having a turd for a brain this morning.

Firstly, sorry I'm so slow in replying. I don't get online much during the weekends.

The script is a bookmarklet. Typically you setup a hyperlink on a webpage with the script as the desination of the link then people can just drag the link to their bookmarks/favorites menu.

I use them for development alot. I'm a software developer and I do alot of web-based apps. One example I have is to toggle the status of all checkboxes on the current page. I click the bookmark and all the checkboxes will go flip-flop their current status. so if a box is checked it will be unchecked and vice versa.

Newsvine has a bookmarklet for seeding articles. It just pops up a new window to the newsvine submission page.

I hope this answers your question if not please let me know and I'll try again.

Yeah, it's really nice to have something quick to leave for self-seeders. :)

Hey finalcut? How about one for advertisers???????

It's easy enough to tweak. What should the text say?

Looks like it only works as a fresh comment, not a threaded one. No big deal as there's no reason for it to be a threaded comment aside from testing here.

There's nothing specifically about advertising. What about this:

You may want to review the ToS for Newsvine and the Code of Honor, in particular item #2:

Before you write, seed, or comment, ask yourself if your contribution increases the strength and virtue of the community.

                  Hope this helps.

Oops. Probably should have included what the foreign language warning looks like:

I tired it three times, and my comments didn't show up? It looks fine, my spell checker notices it, then I try to post and it just goes away! What am I doing wrong?

It only works on top level comments, not replies.

Try clicking on the comment field then running the bookmarklet and see if that helps. They can be a little odd if you haven't used them before.
